7 Common Mistakes when Buying a Used Car and How to Avoid Them

Buying a used car is always a matter of trust. But trust alone is not enough - you have to know what to look out for. In my daily work at Autogalerie Nord, I see customers who have already had bad experiences with private purchases. To prevent this from happening to you, I have summarized the 7 most common mistakes.

1. Not analyzing the market sufficiently

Many buyers fixate on a specific offer too quickly. Compare prices regionally and nationally. Use portals, but also pay attention to the seriousness of dealer reviews. A supposed bargain can quickly turn into a expensive trap if you don't know the market situation.

2. Skipping the test drive

Never, absolutely never, should you buy a car without a test drive. Pay attention to noises during a cold start, shifting behavior, and braking feel. Drive on different types of roads - city, country road, and highway. This is the only way to see if the vehicle really suits you and is technically sound.

3. Ignoring the maintenance history

A "full service history" vehicle is worth its weight in gold. Check whether the intervals were maintained and who performed the work. Paint and bodywork should be documented. At Autogalerie Nord, we place the highest value on transparent histories.

Pro Tip from the Expert:

"Look at the tires. Are they worn unevenly? This could indicate a problem with the alignment or the suspension. A small check that says a lot about the maintenance condition."

4. Letting emotions win over reason

The car shines, the engine sounds great - and you already forget the critical inspection. Stay objective. Ideally, take a second person with you who is not emotionally involved in the purchase. Four eyes always see more than two.

5. Neglecting the technical check

If you are not a professional, have the car checked. An independent used car check by a testing organization like TÜV or DEKRA costs money, but saves thousands of euros in case of doubt. For our vehicles, such a check is often already part of the service package.

6. Underestimating the paperwork

Check all documents: Registration Certificate Part I & II, inspection reports, old invoices. Does the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) match? Are all keys available? A missing document can significantly delay registration.

7. Buying from dubious sources

Buying privately often offers no warranty. A reputable dealer gives you security. Pay attention to a professional presentation and a reachable contact person. We at Autogalerie Nord stand behind every car sold with our name.
